Stowe CenterOn October 28 and November 4, groups of 8th and 9th grade students attended field trips to the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center to participate in a program called “Place and Privilege.” In this workshop, co-sponsored by the Stowe Center and Connecticut Fair Housing, students examined historic documents, present-day data, and lived experiences in order to better understand the relationships between place and opportunity. Through dynamic, conversation-based programming, students thought about how Stowe’s life and impact were shaped by where she lived, and they learned about the history, policies, and choices that have led to segregation in Connecticut. The program empowered students to take informed action in their own communities, culminated in a writing workshop where students brainstormed issues, identified audiences, and composed letters to advocate for positive change.
